Permaculture Landscape Design FAQ's

What is permaculture?

Permaculture in short is permanent agriculture.  It incorporates climate, soil, native plants, companion planting and the like to provide the most functional garden.  It combines one's desired amount of maintenance with land's needs to provide food for you. Permaculture is a form of self sustainable agriculture which means the plants and land work together so that there is less work for you!

I live in the suburbs, not on a farm, can I still get a design for my property?

Yes! Most of our designs are for suburban properties. The best part about permaculture is that the goal is to make the best use of every little bit of space possible! Some of our clients have even gotten rid of the majority of their grass and had a full permaculture landscape put in. In this situation, that means no more mowing grass, but instead, your land is working FOR you by producing food!

What is edible landscaping?

With our permaculture designs we think outside the box and instead of your typical raised bed garden, we utilize the concept of landscaping but with plants that are edible. Instead of a privet hedge, imagine a hedge that produces berries! Picture a beautiful landscape that also is functional and produces food for you and your family?

What is included with permaculture landscape design?

The design plan includes; a site assessment, a planting map (diagram, colors, textures), plant list, nurseries from which the plants can be obtained, general care and maintenance instructions, general hardscape concepts, and any type of remediation work recommended (soil type, earth works).

With the permaculture landscape design, do you offer installation as well?

Yes! The plan we provide will give you enough detail if you prefer to install it yourself; however, as a separate service we do offer the installation of our design as well.

Survival Garden FAQ's

What is a survival garden?

A high-yield food producing garden designed to maximize nutritional value right in your own yard.

How much does it cost?

Packages can be customized depending on how many people you want to feed and how many months of food supply you require. The cost is often less than if you had bought the same amount of food at a grocery store.

What is included?
Our gardens consist of raised beds and include the soil, plants, and installation. A typical two-person garden comes with over 350 food producing plants and that number can go up or down depending on your personal needs.

How much space do I need?

Our gardens are modular and can be arranged differently to fit in most yards.

How soon can the garden be put in?

We can typically design a plan for you within 48 hours and have the majority of the garden completed within 7 days thereafter. Some plant variety may be installed after the initial install at no additional charge.

What kind of plants are in the garden?

We use a variety of plants that will grow best in your yard and produce the maximum amount of nutrition. Every package will include several types of berries, vegetables, fruits, tubers, and beans. You can also add on fruit trees and nut trees.

How will I manage all of this?
When you purchase a survival garden, we will include a guide which will outline the care of each plant. We also plan out each garden bed to make sure that all of the plants work together so there is less maintenance needed overall. If you feel overwhelmed or foresee that you won’t have the ability to manage it, we do have maintenance packages available to help you.

I’m worried all of the food will go bad.
There are various ways to store the food and we will offer tutorials on how to store based on the plant. Within our guide, there will be instructions on how to properly harvest each plant to ensure the most value out of each plant.

Isn't the grocery store cheaper?
Surprisingly it would cost more at the grocery store and you don’t know who is handling your food. You will only take food as needed from your gardens, rather than buying a large amount at the store in which you risk losing a portion to it going bad if not used right away.

What about deer, rabbits and other pests?
While we do try to plant the plants with natural deterrents - I.e. plants that would repel certain pests to protect other plants, if you are in an area with a heavy deer population, we can suggest putting a fence around your gardens. We can also offer this service for you.

How will I know when and how to harvest?
We will include a guide with the package which outlines when and how to harvest each plant as well as how to store the produce.

Animal Systems FAQ's

What about meat? I don't only like to eat vegetables, but meat too!
We have a solution for that too!  We will be raising pastured poultry this year.  We also offer consultation and assistance with getting your own pastured poultry system started.

How do you raise your pastured poultry?

We use Joel Salatin's method for pastured poultry. The poultry are kept in a moveable coop that protects them from predators, yet also moves 2x a day to ensure a constant supply of fresh forage, and cleanliness. This system is not only extremely beneficial for the poultry, but it is also great for the land as the chickens fertile and till up the soil.
